On October 5th, 1966, Ian McGeechan made his debut with Yorkshire (England). The former 32 capped Scottish international (9 of which were as captain) was selected for two British & Irish Lions tours in 1974 and 1977. After retirement he transitioned into coaching. Leading the Scottish team to win a Grand Slam in 1990.
On the 4th October 1917, former Irish-born All Black Legend Dave Gallaher was killed during the battle of Passendale in WW1. He was the captain of the 1905 Originals (thirteen former all blacks died during the war).
